PROJECTS
POPLAR STREET DRIFTWAY
Newport, RI
The project was a design / build replacement of an urban pedestrian accessible boat launch open to the public. The City maintains several of these along one of the waterfront sections of the city known as “The Point” section where residents are provided small boat launching access to Newport Harbor at the terminus of several public streets. Millstone’s engineers procured the contract as the prime contractor on the project teamed with a local construction firm. The project entailed the preparation of a precise existing conditions survey, demolition design of the existing ramp, engineering design of the new ramp, coastal and water quality permitting through state agencies, construction layout, oversight and inspection. Permitted and constructed in the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010 respectively, it has been in operation ever since. Careful protections were required to meet strict water quality standards during construction since excavation within the tidal zone was required.
